the land of red rivers and blue hills, rich in flora and fauna, with over 200 ethnic tribes and communities, national parks, forest sanctuaries and lush green tea gardens, it is a land of untapped opportunities and unexplored potential.

Guwahati is the gateway of Assam and few North East states, it itself has many places of tourist interest.

Inside the city:

Kamakhya Temple :

Situated on top of Nilachal Hill, is a famous pilgrimage for Hindus and draws pilgrims from all over India. One can have a breath taking view of Guwahati city and Brahmaputra river from Bhubaneswari temple, situated on top of the hill and also from the view points situated in different spots.

Umananda temple:

situated on a river island known as Peacock island in river Brahmaputra, a 17th century temple dedicated to Lord Siva. One has to take a ferry or boat to go to this temple. One can enjoy the beauty of Mighty Brahmaputra from this island. The island is also a sanctuary for an endangered population of Golden Langurs which you can see from very close quarters.

Deepor Beel:

Near to the conference site, a fresh water lake, this has been declared wetland under Ramsar convention as Ramsar site for conservation measures in 2002. This is a popular picnic spot and place for resident & migratory birds like Pelicans etc. in winter days.

In the outskirts of the city:

Pobitora wildlife sanctuary is 48km away from the city. This is home for One Horn Rhinos and different species of birds and other animals. This is also a home for many species of migratory birds during winter.

Sonoka is a beautiful village which can be visited on the way to Pobitora. This is situated between river Brahmaputra on one side and rocky hills on the other side. To go to this village, one has to cross canopy of huge rocks. A cave and few monoliths can also be seen here with different flora and fauna.

Chandubi Lake is situated 64km from centre of the city, not far from the conference venue. This is a natural lake with beautiful views at the foothills of Garo hills. One can cross the lake by boat and trek for about 3kms to a village and a small water fall to get the taste of village life in Assam. This is also a land of birds and butterflies.

Hajo has religious significance for Muslims, Hindus and Buddhist.Pua Mecca, Haygrib Madhab temple are the significant tourist attractions.Hajo is 36 km from the centre of the city.

Assam is famous for its Assam silk Three major types of indigenous wild silk produces in Assam-golden Muga, white Pat and warm Eri silk . Sualkuchi,35 km away from the centre of Guwahati is the textile centre of Assam.

Assam is also famous for bell-metal. Which is an alloy of copper and tin. Bell-metal or Kah is the second largest industry in Assam after Bamboo industry. Objects made of this metal is usually used as utensils for domestic and religious purpose. Sarthebari, the centre of bell-metal industry is 100km away from Guwahati.

Assam has 5 National Parks and 18 forest sanctuaries.

Kaziranga National Park and Tiger Reserve:

Situated 200 km away from Guwahati, famous for one Horn Rhinos. Approximately 2/3rd of their total population are found here. This national park has the highest density of Royal Bengal Tigers in the world. Other animals found here are Wild Water Buffalos , wild elephants, Leopards, Holok Gibbon, Swamp Deer, Wild Boars etc. KNP was declared important bird area by Birdlife International for conservation of Avifaunal species.

Manas National park and Tiger Reserve:

Bordering Panbang district of Bhutan, 128km away from Guwahati. The sanctuary has recorded around 55 species of mammals, 380 species of birds, 50 reptiles and 3 species of amphibians. The Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, Wild Elephants, Indian Peafowl are the main attractions. This is also a paradise for bird watchers.

Nameri National Park:

situated near Tezpur, an ancient town of Assam with remnants of historic monuments and temples. This is a home for Deohah ( White-winged wood duck) an endangered species and State Bird of Assam.

This is also home for Tigers, Leopard, Sambar, Pygmy Hog etc. and many other species of resident and migratory birds during winter.

Dibru Saikhowa National Park:

Situated in Tinisukia District, famous for Feral Horses, River Dolphins and many species of resident and migratory birds. Well connected by road, train and air.

Orang National Park:

Situated 2 hours away from Guwahati. Main attractions are Royal Bengal Tiger, Indian Rhinoceros, Pygmy Hog and different species of birds.

Other places that attract tourists are,

Assam is famous for its tea gardens. Many tea garden bunglows have been converted to tourist resorts for the tourists to have the first hand experience of tea gardens. To name a few,Thengal Manor, Bura Sahib Bunglow, Banayan Groves, Chameli Memsahab Bunglow, Wild Mahseer etc.

Majuli, the worlds biggest river island is situated in Jorhat district. A drive of 6 hours by road or air travel from Guwahati to Jorhat and then a ferry ride of about 1 hour is needed to reach this place. This place is famous for Neo-Vaishnavite Satras. These satras are also centre for culture, literature and classical studies. Samoguri Satra is famous for Masks making. Satras are also famous for Satria dance ,musical instruments, Bhaona’s and Raasleela etc.Majuli is famous for handlooms and handicrafts too.

Sibasagar is 6-7 hours journey by road from Guwahati. This was the capital of ancient Ahom kingdom. Some of the ancient structures like Talatal ghar, Rang ghar, Kareng ghar, Joy dol, Shiva dol and Joysagar pukhuri are the main tourist attractions.

From Guwahati one can also travel to Shillong, the capital of Meghalaya which is a picturesque hill station known as “Scotland of the east” at a distance of 100kms. Interested tourists can travel to different places of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland etc. from Guwahati.

City & Temple Tour
Day 01: Guwahati

After breakfast, tour starts with visit to Kamakhaya temple the most venerated shaktipeeths in India (approx time consumed 3 hrs), also visit Sukleshwar & Navagraha Temple. Later take a ferry to Umananda Temple, it is located on the Peacock Island (as named by some poetic British Administrator) in the middle of the river Brahmaputra at Guwahati. It is known as smallest inhabited Riverine Island in the world. Country boats that are available on the bank of Brahmaputra take the visitors to the island. The mountain on which the temple has been built is known as Bhasmacala. Later visit War memorial & Assam emporium. Evening drop at Hotel.

Day 02: Guwahati

After breakfast, we start our day with visit to Sualkuchi it is a census town in Kamrup district in the Indian state of Assam. It is situated on the north bank of the river Brahmaputra, about 35 km from Guwahati, Sualkuchi is a block of Kamrup District. It has large number of cottage industry engaged in handloom, for which it is also known as the "Manchester of Assam". Further we move to Hajo, it is an ancient pilgrimage centre for three religions: Hindus, Buddhists, and Muslims Also visit Madan Kamdev - ‘The Khajuraho of Assam’, is one of the most important historical sites in Assam. Later drop at hotel enroute visit Deepor beel.

The journey from Shillong to Cherrapunjee is one of the most beautiful experiences between the deep mist of clouds, rain, sunny clear sky and many more. You will be seeing the beautiful waterfalls known as Nohkalikai Fall, Seven Sister Falls, Mawsmai Caves, Eco Park. After site seeing back to Shillong enroute visit Elephanta Falls & Shillong Peak. Overnight stay at Shillong.

Day 04: Departure

After breakfast, we move back to Guwahati airport/station/hotel on the way we stop at Umiam Lake or Barapani for some photographic moments.
